Including Your Dog in Your Baby’s Gender Reveal | St Paws Cafe

Over the past few weeks, I had two separate orders from dog parents who were expecting their first human baby. They came to St Paws Cafe to order a gender reveal cake, very simple cream cake with either blue or pink color inside. But the cake wasn't just for the parents.

It was for their dog, too. Their first baby.

And I have to admit, it warmed my heart.

Before the baby arrives, there is the dog

For many of us, our dogs were there first.

They were there when we moved into our first home together. They were there through late nights, lazy Sundays, holidays, difficult days and all the little routines that quietly become part of a life together. We call them our babies. 

We celebrate their birthdays. We buy them presents.

We talk to them as if they understand every word.

And somewhere along the way, they become much more than pets.

They become family.

So when a couple is expecting their first child, I think there is something incredibly beautiful about choosing to include their dog in that moment too.

A gender reveal might traditionally be a celebration for the parents and their soon-to-arrive baby.

But why shouldn't the dog be part of it?

After all, they are about to become a big sibling. I find this especially meaningful because bringing a baby home inevitably changes the rhythm of a household.

There will be a new little person who needs almost everything.

I think something quite beautiful happens when dog parents have a baby.

Of course, everything changes.

There is a new little person who suddenly needs so much of their time and attention. There are new routines, new responsibilities, less sleep and a completely different rhythm to everyday life.

And while we know that our dogs don't understand pregnancy announcements or gender reveals in the same way we do, we know that they are going to experience the change too.

Perhaps that's why I love seeing dog parents include them in these moments.

A gender reveal isn't just about announcing whether you're having a boy or a girl.

For these families, it's also a little celebration of the family they already have — before it grows.

When I was making those two gender reveal cakes, I couldn't help thinking about what those photographs might look like years from now.

There will be a photograph of the parents, excited and probably a little overwhelmed, celebrating the arrival of their first child.

And somewhere beside them will be the dog.

The one who was there before the nursery, before the baby clothes, before the sleepless nights.

Maybe they'll be wearing a little Big Brother or Big Sister bandana.

Maybe they'll be sitting next to the cake.

But they'll be there.

And I think that's the beautiful part.

One day, that baby might look back at those photographs and realise that they were already being celebrated before they were even born.

And their dog was there too.

It also made me think about how much our relationship with dogs has changed.

They aren't simply the pets who live in our homes anymore.

For so many of us, they're woven into our lives.

They come on holiday.

They have their own birthdays.

They have Christmas presents under the tree.

They sit beside us during family dinners.

They have their own little personalities, routines and favourite places in the house.

And now we're seeing them included in some of life's biggest milestones too.

Engagements.

Moving house.

Weddings.

Pregnancy announcements.

Gender reveals.

Becoming a big brother or sister.

I think that's wonderful.

And sometimes, the one who has been there from the very beginning deserves a place in the celebration too.

So, to all the first-borns with four paws:

Your family might be getting bigger.

Your home might become a little louder.

Your humans might be a little more tired.

And things might look different for a while.

But your place in the family isn't getting smaller.

You were there first.

You made them dog parents.

You were their first baby.

And now, you get a brand-new title.

Big brother.

Big sister.

And I can't think of a sweeter reason to make a cake.
