Why I Care About What Goes Into Your Dog’s Cake | St Paws Cafe

A little story about ingredients, simplicity, and why St Paws Cafe make our cakes differently.

When I first started making cakes for dogs, I thought the hardest part would be making them look beautiful.

I was wrong.

The real challenge was deciding what should actually go inside them.

There are so many ingredients that can be used in pet treats and cakes. Some make recipes easier to work with. Some make them last longer. Some make them taste or smell stronger.

But when I started making cakes for my own dogs, I kept coming back to one question:

Will my dogs poop normally after eating this cake?

That question has stayed with me ever since. I WANT TO SEE THAT ADEQUATELY SHAPED BROWN POOP. 

I started looking at food differently. 

The more I learned about pet food and nutrition, the more I realised that I didn't want a complicated ingredient list. 

I wanted to be able to look at a cake and recognise what was in it. No controversial ingredients - Cereal/ Peanut Butter. etc. Instead, the fundamental ingredients should be just: 

Meat/ Sweet potato/ Gluten Free Rice Flour/ Lactose Free Milk/ Olive Oil/ Egg/ Veggie Powder (Colouring)

7 Simple ingredients that I would happily have in my own kitchen. We only use LEAN protein by default as too much fats could cause a burden for senior dogs/ dogs with health issue(s). 

And this has became the philosophy behind St Paws Cafe: Keep it simple. Choose the ingredients carefully, so the dogs can poop normally. 

I know what I'm putting into the bowl. I know where the recipe starts. I know which ingredients I've chosen. My customers are well informed where did I source the protein. It's all about transparency and all written in the cake care card. 

And I don't believe in adding something to a recipe simply because it makes production easier.

The recipes are intentionally simple. No secret. 

Because when someone orders a birthday cake for their dog from St Paws Cafe, I want them to feel confident about what they're feeding their best friend. This is exactly what I want my dogs to eat. 

And that's exactly what I want to make for yours.
